Do you really need an EVF for critical focus on your DSLR? - DSLR FILM NOOB

http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/ I'm often asked to recommend a good EVF (electronic view finder) adapter for critical focus. I will start out by saying I don't use and don't care for EVF adapters. If you're trying to achieve critical focus, its a cheaper and easier option to use the 5x and 10x zoom on your camera.

Using an EVF adapter is on your camera basically like attaching a magnifying glass to an LCD screen. Most screens are scaling the HD footage out of your camera to some other equivalent aspect ratio. Which means the magnifying glass is giving you a close up of something that isn't the true image. The only thing I really see as a good thing about EVF adapters is the fact that it completely covers the monitor when shooting in direct sun light. This could be a plus for some applications, but I prefer to use a sun hood.

I'm sure there are others who feel EVF adpaters are great. I tend to disagree, but if you're in the market for an EVF there is a flood of them on the market to choose from.

i find them good for focusing while mid shot and also for stabilization if i havn't got anything else..

you can't zoom like that when you are recording only when the recording is paused =(

@TheRAZZITEAK Very true. I usually setup my focus points and maker them on a Follow focus before I start recording.

Well I tried out the zacuto evf on last weekend and it was fantastic. So easy to get focus! Also, the peaking function on it is amazing, sharpens the image so you really can see what is in focus. I'm going to have to disagree with you here I'm afraid!

Magic lantern has a zoom focus box feature which is pretty awesome

@eladbari Yeah it is great for unlocking features that really could be there.

Its not too bad once you give it a crack, I have a tut on how to use 4gb cards and over for it but not properly installing- youtube should be full of em.

@cookwerth Seriously?! so you have a small box with the cropped zoom preview on Live video recording!? This is Aweseome! I dont know if it saves you the need for a Naccuto Z Finder but thats amazing!

That magic lantern seems very complicated tho..so many options,,and so little thorough tutorials online...only people reviewing it very first & intial review without giving samples of how to use these features in real life. :\

@eladbari Yeah, a feature called magic zoom which basically does a little cropped zoom box that helps you to focus more accurately

i dont know how any one can focus a camera looking through a normal view finder. i am almost always just a little off
