Very close thunderstorm during the morning of 11th October 2006. The first clap of thunder I calculated to be just over 200m away! I wasn't expecting the thunder to be so quick (and loud for that matter) after the strike, which is why I nearly drop the camera! The rain was so heavy, that the road turned into a river. It was at least 3in deep. Apparently some of the lecture rooms at Brookes Uni were flooded - and parts of the ring road around south Oxford were so flooded, the water came up to car windscreens.

  • Safe? Gah, half the fun is the possibility of being killed!

  • a house is the safest place in a thunderstorm after that is the car the savest

  • silvertk is full of sh-- because the weather channel specials have shown it is the Farrady Cage effect not the tires.

  • that is one mightly blast

  • I suggest you read up on the faraday shield principle.. that is why you are safe in a car.. I can assure you it has absolutely NOTHING to do with the tyres.

  • All to do with the tyres... Its a Metal covering, with rubber (tyres) to earth the strike.. as long as u aint touching metal, the bolt passes from roof, straight to the ground.

  • Nothing to do with the tyres at all.. it all to do with the fact you are inside a metal cage.. If you are caught outside in a storm the safest place is in a car away from any trees. The tyres are wet and water conducts electricity so that is nothing to do with it. NIce storm though :0)

  • its the safest place to be in a thunderstorm, somethin to do with the tyres
