Essex Police is stepping up efforts to catch speeding drivers this month.
Following on from the success of last month's Christmas anti-drink drive campaign which saw 181 drivers arrested, road policing officers will be carrying out random speed checks across the county in a bid to catch more irresponsible drivers.
Essex Police takes a robust approach to speeding drivers 365 days a year but will be increasing static checks for the remainder of January and supporting Community Speed Watch groups as they continue to carry out regular checks in their communities.
Adam Pipe, casualty reduction manager, said: "Residents continue to tell us that speeding is a concern in their communities yet we still see a number of people driving at excess speed and putting themselves and others in danger.
"Carrying out these checks gives us the opportunity not just to deal with those who drive at excessive speed with fixed penalty notices and, in more serious cases, court proceedings but also to stop, engage and offer advice to drivers at the roadside. The checks also help us identify those using the county's roads to commit crime."
We'll be keeping residents up to date with the results of the campaign on our website at http://www.essex.police.uk/speed.
Visitors will be able to use our interactive map (updated regularly) to track where checks have taken place and how motorists driving over the limit were dealt with.
Adam Pipe added: "Speed limits are there as maximum speeds. You should drive according to conditions of the road and the weather. This is about taking responsibility, respecting the road and understanding the effect speeding has on communities up and down the county.
"Essex Police is committed to making the roads of Essex a safer place for all who use them."
