Are you getting ready to film a small production and you need lighting?
Well, now of days not only are times hard but equipment has gone up.
After purchasing a few lights and other necessary equipment needed for DreamTVStudios upcoming Web Series, I realized I better get creative with the other items I need.
After all this is a no-low budget.
But that doesnt mean it has to look that way. Right?

So I decided to make a few the last light source I need for the production.
Softbox

I have created a 26x26 Softbox

First you need a creative mind
ok I'm sure you have that since you click on this video

Now here are the supplies

A very large Cardboard box or Stroyfoam if you would like to use that: Free or up to $3.00
a ruler: already have free, or $1.00 at the dollar store
a pencil or marker : free or $1.00 at the dollar store
scissors: if you have them at home free, if not $2.00
tape- Duct or Electrical or both $1.00
Clip light( Home Depot or Lowes) $6.00
Curly bulb $1.00 to $3.00
Foil- 1.00 at the dollar store or ask your parents for theirs
Wax paper- $1.00

Optional:
These things are optional, because some people feel you dont need it, now the fabric is optional because you can use WAX Paper

Silk/Sheer Fabric
Solid White Fabric
Paint
Velcro/Sticky Back
Tripod ( or you can just use your clip that comes with the clip light)
Large L-bracket 1.00 at home depot. lowes

Cost under $20 with optional items could be a little more then $20 I spent only 1$0 because I had most of the items.

But that is priceless considering a Softbox can range from $60 dollars to $600 depending on what you get.

Finally
Get your lighting on!

  • Nice tutorial - I'm wondering if this is going to give off enough light. I guess if you used a thinner cloth. Have you tried higher wattages to see how they perform or can you suggest a wattage you would use?

    Thanks,

    Rich

  • @rtkiiiprod - one sorry so late very busy- I used three different cloths while filming my series, shear, thin, and white/thick, for a high ligh, medium and low, I never changed the bulb, Iused a 60w full spectrum light energy saving, dont go above 100w.

U am in the process of creating another one with metal- to help with gells, I will post a video as soon as I can. Thanks for checking it out. You can see the lighting used in the series @ dreamtvstudios on youtube

  • you are awesome for making this video, thanks!

  • hi. thanks for the video. would using speedlight also produce good lighting instead of the bulb?

  • thank you so much!!

  • REALLY impressed with this video! I have my first photography shoot on Dec. 4th (that is really CLOSE) and needed some lighting solutions within my budget! I am constructing 2 of these today! What is the best type of bulb that you would recommend for use in these boxes? I am now a loyal subscriber! :) ~ Jen

  • Awesome tutorial! Vinnypoo, it all depends on the look you're going for. There is no one set rule.

  • great video.. best i found on the subject!

  • wow awesome!!

  • It's pretty good, and it looks like its really cheap to make, but what I've heard is that fluorescent is bad to use for lighting because the white balance is hard to get with them, an non-frosted incandescent (tungsten) light is probably your best bet

  • Thank You so much for this tutorial! i have been looking for something as simple as this... ive watched other tutorials on this and yours is by far the best i've come across and i'm very happy to have found u. This is extremely helpful! Thanks!
