@ccraig187 the same way a plane takes off with an engin. although u cant see it in this vid the gilder is being launched by a highspeed winch which pull it fast and the piolet lifts the plane off at 45*. it can also be pulled up by a plane but winch launch is often more cheaper and alot fun because you sudddenly go shooting off at 60mph and then u go up almost vertical. its realy exsilorating and no roller coster will compare it. try it..

It's a winch launch. At 0:47 you can see the tow line with a red cloth (small parachute) on it. The hat-waving is telling the winch operator to take up slack on the line, and then to launch.
