National Guard recovers a VA State Police heli from atop the main hospital here in Roanoke. I heard the transmision developed a problem that grounded it. Why it landed on the helipad on the hospital was not released. Also, it was a big production here in podunk 'Noke and the local law was all hopped up about folks getting a good view of the recovery. Anyhow, we got an excellent spot to watch and it all worked out.

Mad props to the Guard crew for a very professional job.

  • the end of the video isnt showing where we went back to the roof set down light on the pad (cuz the pad wont support the weight of a blackhawk) and picked up the main rotor blades which hung out both side of the aircraft 6 ft. (3ft on each side) That was the most interesting part of the ride since they were in a blade rack and all the wind from forward motion was moving them around. Was a Good Day.

  • @uhcenvg I remember that, though I don't know why I didn't film it. We did watch the whole lift though. You guys did an outstanding job! I have a really good still pic of the sling loaded heli. I don't know if yall have any stills of it, but pm me and I'll email you a copy.

  • The helicopter had a transmission chip light come on when approaching the helipad for landing. The transmission was making metal.

  • Thanks for the info.

  • I was the crew chief on this flight. The first time we have lifted another helicopter. We were also called up by the Governor to do the lift that day.

  • Good piloting, excellent collective control and descent rate under heavy load conditions!
