Honeydew Riot South Africa

I spent Wednesday the 30th of March 2011 at a protest by residents of the Zandspruit informal settlement in Honeydew, South Africa.

They were protesting over poor service delivery, unhygienic living conditions and the building of a pedestrian bridge as shown in this video and the expansion of the road, which cost over R140 million and has outraged the residents. If an RDP house cost R50, 000, they could have built over 2 800 homes!!

Police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, after rocks and burning tyres were thrown onto Beyers Naude Drive which was closed for 24 hours .

I was hit by two ricocheting bullets in the leg but my new friend Lennard got hit directly in the back. It was freak'n sore .

The police arrested 88 people for public violence .

I hope that this video will shed some light on the poor conditions that people are expected to live in, in parts of South Africa.
