Liquid Iodine as a Water Purification Method

Also, talking about a few items I carry: My titanium spork and aluminum canteen and cook cup.

I prefer iodine for these reasons:

- It doesn't have to dissolve. In 20 mins, everything is 'nuked'
- Iodine is an essential element ( added to table salt for example )
- It has been proven to kill most viruses, bacteria, and protozoa.
- Can be used to treat wounds and even penetrates the skin surface
- Kills MRSA and other forms of staph
- Is used to treat and prevent radiation sickness

It should be noted that too much iodine is toxic, but that goes for most things, including bleach.

Good idea allowing some of the Iodine/water mixture to seep through the cap onto the threading. That is one of the things that makes me a little iffy about treating water with my UV light pen. Once the light is off the treatment stops, making it impossible to treat the cap and the threads.

You can taste it a little.

After a few days of using it, your throat will get a little soar and you'll want to take a break from it for a day.

so what kind of iodine can i use? I just see the antiseptic one in stores. the 2 percent iodine ones. Is any iodine ok to use for this purpose? I see the ones were its says call doctor if swallowed.

what percent is the liquid, povidone-iodine, I find it at the pharmacy at 10% and it says if swallowed call a doctor or something like that.

@eyecantcu2 People with thyroid problems need Iodine actually all of us need about 150mcg 244 would be ideal you would need 20 times that to show any problems at all. most people get between 50 and 75 mcg of iodine a day .

A liter is bigger than a quart. Why do you put 3 drops in a liter and 4 in a quart?

If you hold the opening downstream, you will get less crap in the bottle.

Povidone is also great for disinfecting wounds and all kinds of infections, ulcers, etc.

And another thing: in case of a nuclear event, the iodine intake will prevent your body from absorbing radioactive iodine-131 (a uranium and plutonium fission product) that may be in the environment and would accumulate in your thyroid gland and give you thyroid cancer.

Good video, well thought out. just a short note. Iodine should not be used by persons with an allergy to iodine, persons with active thyroid disease,persons taking medication that racts to iodine or pregnant women. Iodine also reacts to the starch in foods turning it blue. (It's a little weird eating blue oatmeal!) it won't hurt you, but it looks unappitising.
