A VMware movie capture of the installation of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS desktop edition.

Online resizing has made it a little blurry, but it should at least give you a flavour of what the new graphical installer looks like.

And if you are new to Linux, then you can get a feel for what the installation is like.

  • I would be interesteb in Linux, but i wouldn't have it as my only OS. I would need Windows or Mac os x as well, as there isn't an iTunes version for Linux, but im sure there must be a way to use iTunes on Linux.

  • If you really want to, then you can run iTunes on Linux using Crossover Office. I'd recommend moving your iTunes library to a DRM free format, though. That way you'll be able to play the music that you bought for as long as you want to, not for as long as the DRM owner wants to. :-)

  • yay for stealing redhat/fedora gui installer whooops forgot its opensource

  • Why reinvent the wheel? :)

  • Was wondering if I should install it or not, just got the disks in the mail the other day.

  • I would! It is a piece of cake. If this is your first time with Linux then Ubuntu will not be a bad place to start.

Getting Xgl desktop effects working doesn't take much effort either. Nice eye candy that does actually make the destop feel like a nicer, more productive, place to be.

  • Oh man... Now I'm nostalgic...

  • @jdt3000 use and older release like the one shown in this video (6.06 is still widely used by many with old boxes and there are plenty of parches and bug fixes). Install the minimal system and add the packages you need. Replace Gnome with Openbox or similar (read Ubuntu Community Docs) and there you go. Also don't forget you can always use other distros. I really like Puppy Linux, which not only looks really nice but also has plenty of useful software on board and works superb on old computers.

  • @AndyBold By reinventing the wheel, you can make things innovative because of the first knowledge.

  • Hi, I have an old Samsung P28 laptop which only has 256mb RAM and 40gb HDD, I have tried the most recent versions of Ubuntu but they still run very slow, would a past/previous version of Ubuntu work faster? Please can someone give me some advice ASAP. Thanks.

  • hi i ran installation of this exact setup and it took me to a command prompt after installation it never booted to os can get pass the command lines asking for pass and user i entered and still prompts me to enter a command what did i do wrong..

  • That boot up splash brings back so many memories :)

  • Make partitions, when you're installing Linux, choose the right partition.

  • how do i install ubuntu into a certain partition with out erasing my entire drive?

  • ... say what?
