Drilon, Tatad clash during break in Corona trial
KIMBERLY JANE TAN, GMA News January 19, 2012 7:41pm

Sen. Franklin Drilon on Thursday had a sudden run-in with former Sen. Francisco "Kit" Tatad, who accused him of acting like a prosecutor during the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Tatad, who was at the Senate to observe the impeachment proceedings, said he approached Drilon when the Senate went on a break during the day's trial. The Senate, sitting as the impeachment court, was at that time arranging the documents presented by prosecution witness and Taguig register of deeds Atty. Randy Rutaquio.

"I said he [Drilon] was doing a good job but that he was beginning to sound like a prosecutor. I said that as a friend," Tatad told reporters during an interview.

Drilon, however, allegeldy did not receive his comment positively.

"Sabi niya, what's your problem? Ipa-disquaify mo ako," Tatad quoted Drilon as saying.

Drilon, meanwhile, refused to discuss the incident with reporters. "Maliit na bagay lang yan. Let's talk about the impeachment," he said in a separate interview.

Drilon said he does not have any ill feelings for Tatad. "Kaibigan ko naman 'yun," he said.

Tatad, for his part, said that he just came to the Senate because he was writing a book on the impeachment. He wrote one on the impeachment of former President Joseph Estrad in late 2000.

Earlier in the day, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, the presiding officer in the trial, had defended the senators, saying that they remain neutral and are only clarifying details when they address witnesses. — KBK, GMA News

  • DRILLON - TRAPO! (balimbing kung saan ang pera doon cya.)

  • right to clarify, yes. but the right to elicit information that the prosecution could not do on its own, no. There are rules to be followed, rules that are meant to provide at least a veneer of impartiality to the entire proceedings. Wag garapal, in short. He can coach the prosecution team privately but to do so during the impeachment proceedings is UNGENTLEMANLY, no matter his motives or principles. Parang basketball lang yan, dapat hindi sumali ang referee sa laro.

  • What utter nonsense and crap is this LEAH NAVARRO saying about giving latitude to the prosecutors. If the prosecutors are not up to it, then that's their problem. The truth is those prosecutors/congressman gave up their law practice, if at all they practiced law in the past, because they realized that politics will bring in more money for them, and they only have to use 5% of their cerebral matter.

  • sana sumali na lang si Drilon sa prosection.

    sobrang biased siya.

  • mga mukhang pork barrel yang mga yan... kaya hindi umunlad unlad ang pilipinas..
