The IMAV stands for International Micro Air Vehicle Conference and Competition.

International expert in the area of autonomous flight technology joined also this year the IMAV2011.
The flying robots are capable to execute tasks autonomously like detecting a simulated drug deal.

Autonomous flying robots are smaller than 80 cm and are capable to execute complex tasks without a human steering it.
Think of monitoring embankments or oil pipes, measuring toxic gasses in the air or exploring buildings that are on fire or are heavily damaged by an earthquake. Also for crowd management it would be very sufficient en cheap to gather the necessary information.

Micro air robots can work with large numbers together in a network and make decisions. Especially in crisis situations it is important to get the right information in the right place on the right time. For this the micro air robots can be very valuable.

Next to the conference there are two competitions. The indoor and the outdoor competition.
At the outdoor competition the flying robots had to find a simulated drug deal. The robot had to find a specific vehicle and observe the area around it. It had to count people that were walking around in the area and drop a listening device in one of the drop zones. Extra points could be scored when flying through a porch and hitting a balloon.

At the indoor competition the flying robots had to explore a building, rcognizing a picture, picking up an object, fly out through the chimney and drop the object outside of the building.

Thales Research and Technology Netherlands is researching intelligent systems where users and systems work together optimally. These systems can make decisions in consultation with each other and the user or autonomously. By collaboration between these intelligent systems in micro robots and the end users, the air robots can be used more efficient and new applications will be possible.
