It seems most, if not all Central powers were on the winning side in 1918.. An armstice could be called between nations, and perhaps WW2 could be avoided, but USA inexplicably entered the war and urged all central powers to surrender...

The Russian revolution started because the people of Russia were sick of the tsar, sick o the imperialist government and the fact that they were fighting a useless war against the central powers, from which they weren't gaining anything. So the imperialist government was removed and a socialist republic was formed, and signed the Brest-Livosk treaty, announcing an end of the war against the central powers, and giving Germany and Austria land.
