Great technique, but the limitation is that this depends on the gun having a long barrel. If the gun was real small, this wouldn't work.
I thought of something similar to this, which does not depend on this.
I would drop my stance, grab both the criminal's hands and push them up, then make an arm lock on him and finally point then gun right on his neck [the arm I lock depends on which hand he is holding the gun with (since the other hand is just used for extra grip)].
