During the first year of growth, grape vines require training in order to develop a full capacity of new growth, so pruning back most of the new growth from that year is crucial to make room for the lush growth of the following season. Trim back grape vines each dormant season with instructions from a sustainable gardener in this free video on gardening.

  • This was not vague! Thanks you for your info :) I learned a lot.

  • That was extremely vague. Maybe helpful to some, but vague.

  • So, how do you trim the grape vines during growth? My grape vine is several years old, well established. But I hadn't cut it correctly. My main stem seperates at the bottom where I had cut the left side once (yikes!) so the right main stem is divided again at a higher level.

Now I'm wondering, are there "suckers" that need to be trimmed or do I just leave it now and prune it correctly next winter?

  • i have to say that your video on how to prune grape vine is more educational than dave wilson nursery.or any other grape pruning video. thanks yolanda.
