John Denver wrote this song in 1971, along with band member, Mike Taylor, for a TV documentary titled "The Eagle and the Hawk." At that time Bald Eagles were an endangered species, and in most parts of the US, practically extinct. In 1976 the US Fish and Wildlife Service officially listed the Bald Eagle as a national endangered species. Nineteen years later, in 1995, the status of the Bald Eagle was upgraded to "threatened." In 2007, the Interior Department took the Bald Eagle off of the endangered species list. They are still protected by the Migratory Bird Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
These photos were taken in late March, 2010, as the eagles were migrating to their nesting areas. When the ice begins to thaw, fish that had died during the winter float to the surface of the open water, where the eagles gather to feast. It was an awesome sight to see, hundreds of these magnificent raptors all gathered together. To quote John's famous catchphrase, "Far out!"
