Humanitarian efforts to help rebuild Haiti. Six months after the devastating January quake, the United Nations recently released a report stating that 1.5 million people remain in tent camps without basic sanitation. However, international efforts are still being made to assist Haitian residents striving to recover their day-to-day lives, with organizations such as US-based CARE that have been building 30 transitional shelters per week while also distributing construction materials to reinforce self-built structures for privacy, dignity and safety mainly to women-headed households and other vulnerable people. UK-based HelpAge International has been aiding the elderly with distributed food, well-being kits, temporary shelter, medical supplies and nursing care, while Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has partnered with Ashtrom Jamaica Limited to build a disaster-proof office for Haitian President René Préval that replaces the one destroyed in the quake. Meanwhile, US-based Mercy Corps is joining with Haitian soccer star Bobby Duval and the Haitian Ministry of Youth, Sport and Civic Action to assist youth in healing through engagement in sports, and the United Nations Childrens Education Fund (UNICEF) has been ensuring that hundreds of thousands of children and their families have water, food, shelter, medicines and education supplies.
Our heartfelt thanks and Providence bless CARE, HelpAge International, CARICOM, Mercy Corps UNICEF and all others whose dedicated efforts are making a difference in Haitian people's lives. Surely such support is ensuring greater resiliency as we pray for their flourishing stability, sustenance and peace.
