This variation of Rota's themes is surrounded in a bit of mystery and controversy. The producers wanted Henry Mancini to do the score not Nino Rota. Francis Ford Coppola was determined to keep Nino Rota. They allowed it to go to a test screening and get the audiences reaction, which met with approval. However, the producers still removed the Pickup from when they arrive in LA (replaced by the Manhattan Seranade; I've inserted the Pickup over this scene for my own enjoyment and it works a lot better! Plus, I inserted Mancini's Baby Elephant Walk over the top and it's quite funny :)) and when it came to this scene, they disagreed with Rota's music. They felt it came in too early. As far as I can tell, Walter Murch only doubled it over the top of itself to create more of a tense theme. However, that's not to say Rota's original intent wouldn't have worked, I'm sure it would have. Nevertheless, it is still his score just with extra editing. And it's a shame that this and the hospital ques (among other things) are never recorded on CDs.
wish this was available without the sfx. It's an excellent song.
