Former Senator and Governor, Lowell Weicker, attended a meeting of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalites at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cromwell, CT this morning. Waiting for his arrival was a small band of protesters. There were as many or more news hounds than protesters, channel 8 and channel 30 prominent among the pack.
Joe Markley was one of several organizers of the huge rally at the Capitol in 1993 that attracted 65,000 people protesting the new state income tax bill. The bill passed and the degradation of Connecticut's once-thriving economy begain.
Weicker faced only one billion in shortfalls in 1991. If he had applied the same fiscal prudence then he now promotes, he would have been hailed as a hero and the state would have been in good condition now.
Weicker's addiction to more spending has forever marked him as the most despised politicain in the history of Connecticut.. Some spine at the right time might have proved so different.
