B.C. currently faces the largest forest disturbance in its history, all the result of a tiny beetle. Over the last few years, due to climate change and mismanagement of the forests, the Mountain Pine Beetle's population has skyrocketed, and, consequently, B.C.'s pine tree population has plummeted.

In The Fall Down, scientist Dr. Allan Carroll of the Canadian Forest Service describes the evolution of the Mountain Pine Beetle, including its survival methods, life cycle and attack of pine trees. To combat the beetle, the main response has been to increase logging, and logging companies have been working around the clock attempting to capture as much economic value from the invested fibre as they can.

But what will happen when all the wood is gone? The logging industry in B.C. is worth an annual 30 billion in sales and accounts for over 50% of the logging industry in Canada.

Politicians, First Nations chiefs and citizens of the communities in the interior all have differing opinions on what can and should be done. Their outlooks on the infestation provide us with a picture of how B.C.'s environmental and economic future may unfold and the role we can play to best cope with this crises while doing all we can to prevent another from occurring.
