You do realize that Maasai people kill lions right? It's learned behavior, for centuries the Maasai have been getting the better side of their exchanges with lion prides, not with guns but with spears and intelligence. It's well documented with anthropologists that lions fear the Maasai people, similar to how great white sharks fear orca killer whales.
