Tom Kirby, drummer for Tonto & the Renegades, talks live on WMMQ-FM about playing in a garage band in the 1960s.
This interview is from May 2010.
The band was from Grand Ledge, MI - but were a part of the Lansing, MI teen scene.
The band's song "Little Boy Blue" is a favorite among garage 45rpm collectors.

A little more about the band:
Tonto & the Renegades were a Grand Ledge, Michigan garage band. Formed in the mid-sixties in a small town, the band were a part of the Lansing teen scene, which also included The Woolies, The Ones, Beaux Jens and The Plagues.
The band recorded at the now legendary Fenton Records in Sparta, Michigan - one of those sessions spawned the garage nugget "Little Boy Blue" - which was penned by band member Terry Slocum for his then girlfriend, Vickie Schnepp.
A later session the band recorded with legendary guitarist Dick Wagner of The Frost.
Tonto & the Renegades toured all over Michigan throughout their high school years, playing to huge crowds of dancing teens.
Years later, in the '80s, the band was featured on the "Back From the Grave" compilation, a highly acclaimed collection of '60s garage bands.
Today, they are in the Michigan Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, and have more fans than ever!
Tonto & the Renegades' songs can be purchased on a re-issue 45rpm single by Misty Lane Records, and on the "Scream Loud! The Fenton Records Story" CD/LP.

Band members:
Terry Slocum (lead guitar/vocals)

Tom Kirby (drums)

Gary "Tonto" Richey (bass/vocals)

Jeff Keast (organ/vocals)

Bill Ford (guitar/vocals)

  • Tom is a good friend of mine. I saw his new band "The Trail's End" in Grand Ledge a couple months back. I love the new leather saddle bags you put on your Hardly scooter Tom:) Tom. I got your email with your redone song "Miriah" Tell your Mom I said hello. Bill

P.S. If anyone wants to see a couple of videos of Tom and "The Trail's End" band they are on my youtube..

  • terry slocum RULES

  • Tom Kirby is a nice guy! I have chatted with him by email and in the GaragePunk forum from time to time. Little Boy Blue is an amazing Garage Rock song, even if Tom doesn't care for that moniker. I have that MP3 on my site, and its not ripped from a CD, it is recorded from Bill Kelly's Teenage Wasteland radio show. If you like the song, buy the CD compilations it is on, or the re-issue 45 mentioned in the description.

  • A great song and some supurb drumming by Tom Kirby
