1999 commercial for Gateway Country. Gateway Country was a series of stores owned and operated by Gateway, who had recently shed the "2000" from their name, just in time for the year 2000. These stores allowed customers to try out working PCs and spec out a Gateway computer and perhaps purchase it online. Computers were not directly for sale in the stores, you could not walk out with one today. This was because of Gateway's strict build-to-order policy, but the inability to buy something today was viewed as a major mistake and may have been a factor in the closing of the entire chain of stores after only about a year of operation.
Gateway shrunk to a shadow of its former self and was acquired by Acer in 2007.
This 30 second spot aired during a showing of the 1999 Monaco GP in the United States.
It's a shame. We got one from 1997, still works, everything but the CD-ROM drive which I just added one from my 2007 Gateway, which I savaged parts from after it died few days after warranty up, failed graphics card AND HD (WDC) at about the same time. Looking inside my 2007 Gateway, it's totally Acer, nothing like Gateway ever was, just a cheap, hunk of shit built quickly and without concern about the customer or upgradability. Gateway WAS, that's for damn sure, and 2K was it's heyday. Too bad.
