Fearless" is the title of the third track on Meddle by Pink Floyd. The song's slow tempo and mellow acoustic sound bear similarities to some of the other tracks on the first side of the album. David Gilmour and Roger Waters composed the song on guitar using an open tuning in G major. Waters plays the acoustic guitar parts on the studio recording, despite his job as the band's usual bassist.
Near the beginning and at the end of the song, a field recording of fans in Liverpool's Kop singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" is superimposed over the music. This Rodgers and Hammerstein song became the anthem of Liverpool F.C. after Gerry & The Pacemakers had a number-one hit with their recording. Roger Waters is in fact a staunch supporter of Arsenal F.C..

The song is almost regarded as an underground hit for Pink Floyd, although it was not released as a single in the UK or played live by the band. Its title is derived from a football (soccer) slang term for "awesome", which became a cliché among the band's touring party.

Lyrics:

You say the hill's too steep to climb
Climb it.
You say you'd like to see me try
Climbing.

You pick the place and I'll choose the time
And I'll climb
That hill in my own way.
Just wait a while for the right day.
And as I rise above the tree lines and the clouds
I look down, hearing the sound of the things you've said today.

Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd
Smiling.
Merciless the magistrate turns 'round
Frowning.

And who's the fool who wears the crown?
And go down,
in your own way
And every day is the right day
And as you rise above the fear-lines in his brow
You look down, hearing the sound of the faces in the crowd.

  • @IceGhilliedGopher that's The KOP chanting You'll Never Walk Alone

  • @iRECKONER yeah i no the song that's about right.

  • @philip1967ful what is it even about again.

  • One of BEST Guitar Riff EVER!

  • Referring to the Masters of Rock album cover at 2:34. Fuckin' terrible! Again, an insult to the intelligence of us die-hard Floydians!

  • I don't understand the references to Syd Barrett since obviously by 1971, Syd was well out of the band. And that cheesy, stupid-ass mock-up cover from the Meddle album gate-fold photo with Barrett in place of Gilmour, with the shitty lookin' pastel-colored shirts! Obviously a terribly conceived pirate mock-up by some European bootleg record company. This insults the intelligence of the die-hard Floyd fan. Like HELLO?!!? Syd was not invited (and long, long 'gone') for the Meddle sessions!

  • Definitely in my Top 5 Favorite Floyd songs ever!!! And Floyd are my ALL-TIME FAV BAND. This song hits such an emotional chord with me, as well as with countless other Floydians I've talked with. Virtually every one of them cite this as a Floyd favorite. How can you not love the beautiful melody and Gilmour's classic tenor? Magic to the ears! :)

  • what is the crowd saying at the end?

  • @EmigrantRiana EXCELLENT !! ALWAYS LOVED THAT PART OF THE SONG >> FOOTBALL CHANTS FOREVER!!
