Making the 2 and rolling ahead with that angle means you have to be very precise with your speed control to get the correct angle on the 3. Its called "crossing the narrow neck of the position zone". The way Joe plays it you have a huge area to put the cueball to get a good angle on the 3. Nine ball position is all about getting the correct angle on your next ball not just an open shot at it. See youtube clip "Robert Byrne Standard pool" to help u visualize the position zone here on the 3 ball.

Pause at 8:25.The reason he stuns across for the 3 is so he can be sure of getting the proper angle to come back down the table for the 6. Its possible to roll forward for the 3 but you have to be more precise because the cueball is rolling closer to the 3 and if the cueball rolls a bit to far or not far enough you will end up with a steeper angle on the 3 which makes it tougher to get on the 6. Its true that stunning across for the 3 is a tougher shot but it almost guarantees correct angle on 3

Joe thanks for posting for us.
I would like if you would talk about what you are thinking. In rack 4, you really hit the 2 and stuned the CB to the right for the three.
I would of just rolled up table to shoot the three in the upper rt corner. I am sure you had a position reason but I still struggle with choosing which way to go. It seems I always pick the hard way to go.
Thanks

when I want the cb to go over to the side rail I put a little low outside to spin it back towards center table.

If I role forward on that 2 ball just a little I'll have too much angle on the 3 and if I go forward more I'll be going towards the 3. The stun over guaranteed a good angle on the 3 bouncing out towards the big part of the position zone plus that type of stroke is the type you feel when you're playing with confidence.
