According to Wikipedia, Spooky " was originally an instrumental song by saxophonist Mike Sharpe (Shapiro) which first charted in 1967 hitting #57 on the US pop charts. Its best known version was created by The Classics IV when guitarist James Cobb and producer Buddy Buie added lyrics (Harry Middlebrooks, Jr. is also credited as a writer)"
There are numerous cover versions.

Dusty Springfield did record it, around 1970, but I don't know if she was the first. Imogen Heap recorded it for a film soundtrack (Just Like Heaven?), not Six Feet Under. She did record a short version of 'I'm a Lonely Little Petunia' for SFU.
