@weasel884 that would be a pony motor it runs off gas because when the first built these tractors electric motors were unreliable

Operator's manual states the engine is to be first engaged to crank the diesel without compression to reduce wear to the starting engine clutch. Crank without fuel or compression until oil pressure is obtained. Add compression then add fuel. Adding fuel too soon washes down the cylinder walls with raw unburned diesel. 1-800-522-7448 for the operator's manual.

@jdgman1952 Not really that they were unreliable, you just couldn't get a powerful enough motor that would be small enough to do the job. Most were 6V systems at the time and that would further complicate things.
