    the word "material",the first vowel letter "a" can be pronounced as in "gave" "cat" "father".

  • Hi gongfubaby,

    Good question. You're right vowels can be pronounced all different ways. However, in the word 'material', the 'a' is in an unstressed syllable and is pronounced as the neutral sound 'uh', as in the word 'about' and 'around'. This sound is called a schwa.

  • This was helpful. As a Spanish Speaker I find all the English vowel sounds really difficult!!

    In fact, I coulnd't tell the difference between colour and collar. They sound the same to me.
