First version is true gospel bluegrass. Second is....Grand Ole Opryfied. Hate the living hell out of it.
Oh, and Doc Watson's version is the first.

First version is much better.

I've heard a lot of versions of Shady Grove; this one does not work for me.

all the doc versions i have are in Dm, or capoed up to Ebm
Dm C Dm Dm F C C Dm is how doc plays it, he adds the F chord some cool harmonic movement, most people omit it, as does UVC in this video.

I have always hated the first version you sang, I Prefer the one by Doc Watson

For some reason, when a woman sings the minor version I love it, but when a guy sings it I don't like it as much. Don't know why, guess'n I jess likes the womerns vocals. But I agree, the Bill Monroe Newport Folk Festival major key version is best. Even the Kingston Trio can't beat it!

LOL at the face you make when you messed up during the 1st version... So that's a C chord, and Dminor???

Yep...if you try to play along you'll have to detune your guitar though. For some reason my camera records it at a lower pitch. For the record, the major key part is E major, A major, B7. The "Bill Monroe" version is done in C major, but it's too high for me to sing, and my voice is already bad enough.
