I've been on a big Copland kick of late. Here is his, at least so far as YouTube is concerned, somewhat ignored Symphony for Organ and Orchestra; the 2nd movement is a Scherzo.

Performing is the St. Loius Symphony Orchestra led by Leonard Slatkin with Simon Preston playing the Organ.

Enjoy!

  • This movement is one of my favorite Copland's pieces. An early example of the tonality that he would abandon but return to 10 years later. After conducting the premier of Symphony #1 in 1925, Damrosch turned to the audience and said "If a young man of 25 can compose a piece like that, in 5 years he'll probably be ready to commit murder." Copland was furious, but Nadia Boulanger, who played the organ that night, told him to forget about it.

  • Our Winter Percussion show this year has this as the opening theme! Really fun stuff
