Rock star or role model? That's the question the media -- and an angry parents group -- is debating about Rihanna. The 23 year-old R&B singer released a violent new music video for her song "Man Down." In the video, the singer is depicted shooting a man who sexually assaults her. The video appears to be a not-too-subtle jab at former boyfriend Chris Brown, who infamously battered Rihanna in 2009.
Rihanna is now defending her career after the Parents Television Council demanded she take the video off TV. The PTC's Melissa Henson said, "Today's youth need more positive strategies for dealing with conflict than those portrayed in the Rihanna video. This video is one ... that lyrically or graphically glorifies violence and other behavior inappropriate for teens and youth."
In response to the outrage, Rihanna took to Twitter on Thursday, June 2, 2011, when she wrote, "The music industry isn't exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US! It's your job to make sure they don't turn out like US."
The PTC's outcry has so far fallen on deaf ears. The BET has refused to stop playing the controversial video. A rep for network told TMZ that they maintain a "comprehensive set of standards" and that the "Rihanna 'Man Down' video complied with these guidelines."

@ThespianJewel you have to admit that the media USUALLY lets violence slide while sex is often frowned upon (see: network TV shows). I think sexual material is less harmful than violence, but i agree wit rihanna on this one!

Rihanna was just expressing something OTHER than sex, and it's controvesial, it wasn't meant to be nice (it wasn't a love song), but cuz she wasn't writhing on a bed like Lady Gaga, she's told to remove her video??? I say HIGHLY hypocritical ... example? Lady Gaga and Beyonce poison a dude on 'Telephone' but it's still in the top one hundred and going strong:P - go Riri:) we love you:)!!

I think RIhanna is just trying to compete with Lady Gaga's controversial antics!
