Swimming with a 35' whaleshark off of the north east corner of the Yucatan Peninsula on June 28, 2008. We were staying on Cozumel and took the ferry across to Playa del Carmen at about 5am. From there we boarded a bus for the occasionally rough ride across the peninsula to Chiquila. From there we cross the bay by boat to Isla Holbox. After a delicious lunch (prepared by a young German ex-pat cook) we board another boat for the hour or so ride roughly in the direction of Cuba and considerably out of sight of land. Somehow the captain knew to stop and we took turns swimming with the whale sharks. We spent about 2-2 1/2 hours following the whale sharks around before turning back for Holbox. After another quick bite to eat, we headed back for Playa and the last ferry of the day back to Cozumel.
