During this past Presidential campaign, I have developed a growing appreciation of all the challenging things Barack Obama must be going through, straddling the pathways of racial and cultural divides.

Being bi-racial (Black/White), I've certainly had my share of living life in-between, and have learned the value of drawing the best from both realms.

Upon hearing news of the passing away of Barack Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, I was overcome with emotion.

When someone said how sad it was that she died not seeing her grandson's historic achievement, my immediate reaction was that her death did not prevent her from seeing his victory as our new President, it merely prevented us from seeing her witnessing it from a different vantage point.

It was then I knew I wanted to express my feelings about dreams and inspiration; to provide encouragement and comfort to the Obama family with this public testimonial.

Madelyn Dunham, inspired by the dreams of Dr. King and others, was steadfast in her dream for her family. Now, Barack Obama is reaching beyond to inspire new generations of visionaries.

As we take time to remember Madelyn Dunham and the Obama family let us also remember those, past and present, whose blood, sweat and tears, joys and sorrows, courage and perseverance, have contributed to the wellspring of our humanity. To them, in deepest thanks we give.

  • Ellison, Hearing the news of her passing the day before the election and knowing what that must have meant to him, was quite extraordinary. It's ultimately the Grandmothers who carry us so far on our roads in life and this is a fitting memorial to a beautiful woman. Thank you for this moving tribute.

  • Beautiful, powerful, hopeful, a beautiful tribute to Madelyn Dunham. Be prepared to watch this in tears!

  • Very nicely done, I used the Luther Vandross version in a black history version in honor of Dr. Dorothy Height who recently passed.

  • Yes, indeed! Jan. 20th has proven to be the most celebrated U.S. Presidential Inauguration in our history. Why? Because the movement of "We the People" has begun. Thanks for your comment. - e
