My name is Gary Donnelly and I am standing for the Cityside Ward as an independent republican candidate in the forthcoming Council Election on May 5th. I am writing to you today to ask you to consider making a difference with your vote.
I am a forty year old father of three who comes from a republican family in Creggan and have been actively working to advance republican aims and objectives since I was a teenager. As a republican, I have been at the forefront of many campaigns to deliver social justice for the community. In recent years these have included the following:
• The successful protest campaign to re-open the Brandywell dump and re-cycling amenity that was closed as a result of a unanimous decision taken by our current local councillors.
• I was one of the Raytheon 9 protesters who took action against the Raytheon arms factory in Springtown during the brutal Israeli onslaught on Lebanon. This protest and the court case which followed exposed the hypocrisy of local politicians who knew Raytheon was manufacturing arms in Derry but denied it.
• The Foyleville campaign to fight against the closure of the old people's home and defend the rights of the elderly to a decent standard of care.
• Support and solidarity with the Justice for Maureen McGinley campaign when bureaucrats at Altnagalvin Hospital closed rank to deny access to the truth about what happened to Maureen.
• Working with community organisations to mobilise broad-based resistance to drastic British Government cutbacks such as the Educational Maintenance Allowance.
• Working to eradicate prejudice against minority groups in society including the gay community.
• I work on a voluntary basis to give support to many residents' groups and individual residents who are faced with particular problems such as the presence of drug-dealers and anti-social behaviour.
• Organising protest campaigns to defend the rights of republican prisoners in Maghaberry and Portlaoise Gaols and campaigns to expose injustices perpetrated by British police in Ireland.
As an independent councillor, I will deliver DIRECT representation of the community's views both by challenging the self-serving interests of political parties and by providing a solution-oriented service that prioritises the needs of the community. I will challenge the cronyism, horse-trading and back-scratching of the so-called 'mainstream' parties who are failing working class communities. These parties are complicit in the drastic cuts to public spending that will target the most disadvantaged.
My campaign has already been subjected to harassment by the British PSNI. Election workers have been subjected to stop and search tactics and election material has been confiscated. I know very well that there is a price to be paid for standing up and challenging the Stormont Muppet Show and the British establishment. I have been assaulted and harassed by the PSNI, had my arm broken in three places and jailed on trumped up charges. However, neither I nor my election team will be deterred by intimidation.
I invite you, the electorate, to consider the value of an independent voice representing your interests within Derry City Council. My work is voluntary and is not limited by office hours. While I do hold republican beliefs and values, I have a strong track record of giving assistance to people from all sections of the community regardless of their political, religious or other affiliations.
