Naginta please

A favorite weapon of female samurai, but not exclusive. Many male samurai also used it and there were many other weapons that women samurai used and with which they trained. Naginata does always make me think of Tomoe Gozen... :-)

Were those (or kendo) real fight movements used by soldiers of the time,or exclusive to the sport?
-
Naginata was a military arts for daughters of the samurai class
-
I don't know much but red seemed as whole different level then white white did strikes but none where successfully implemented while red stayed calm and waited for openings deflecting all her strikes
-
Kendo point system is: Head (top), throat, left and right torso and left and right underarm.
Naginata has also the legs below the knees.

@Insomnium2188 Its not a very important issue. In its country of origin, the weapon evolved towards the perception of being a woman's weapon. Doesnt make the weapon inferior. Its actually a much more powerful weapon than a katana. However, thats how the weapon is perceived today in Japan.

@Lordofthenipplerings accept in Europe and Australia.... The naginata being a woman's weapon is very relative and it pretty much all depends on the martial arts demographics of a region. it isn't based on any kind of historical accuracy. but w/e its a trivial matter anyway :)

@Insomnium2188 Its a woman's weapon. "The naginata has become associated in modern Japan as a woman's weapon as it is studied by women more than men"
It wasnt always a woman's weapon. Its a better weapon than a katana in most cases except for ease of use and carry. But for whatever reason. The naginata is now mostly trained by women, while katanas are mostly trained men.

@Lordofthenipplerings Actually during the senkoku jidai the yumi, yari, teppo and naginata were the primary weapons of samurai and ashigaru alike. in ages before, mounted archery was the way to go. So the naginata is most definitely not a woman's weapon and the katana was normally not used as a primary weapon but to be used when your spear or naginata broke or in close quarters when spears became impractical
can someone explain to me how the point system works?

Intressting with ningata. I'm myself a girl kendoka from Sweden, that's really dominated by men (at least in Sweden). So it was fun to see a budomartial art that many women are training. Are there any bigger diffrences between rules (How you get the points etc) of Kendo and Ningata? :)

@XxRosaPanternxX Well no difference, just another zone to hit (leg), otherwise it is pretty similar. If you practice Kendo, then you can try Naginata :) and even have a match Vs a naginata.

I'm just wondering, but are weapons contests limited to two contestants using the same weapons? Fencing using epee/foil, Kendo using bokken/shinai, or here with the naginata all have their own circuits, but does anyone know about mixed contests?

Well there are several type of competition in Naginata and Kendo, and one of them is a team VS team where you can mix Kendo and Naginata.
To my knowledge there are no 100% Kendo VS naginata competition as individuals.
The other way to have mixed fight is to visit other style Dojo and have "friendly" match.
