@sonnych69 a few gracies were black belts in judo but were useless enough at it,they never practised it with commitment.The 5050 and several other positions and techs were developed by trial and error only since the last few decades in bjj,they were never even in bjj before,never mind judo,its a continual process of innovation.Newaza never stopped anywhere,the rule just made it unproductive to spend time on it.It was kano and then the ijf that hampered newaza ,not the martial arts ban.

@scarred10 eddie has admitted that he didnt invent anything the twister is actually a folkstyle wrestling move second the gracies were ranked in judo and taught by a 7 dan judoka maeda who was versed in newaza third spider gaurd 5050 and all you mention are are just renamed judo moves they need to take a move name after themselves to promote the school also japan teaches judo differently than in the states newaza never stopped in japan it just went undergound after roosevelt put a ban in japan

@shinjukool if a concentration on newaza can come up with original techs in japan in the kosen universities then so can the brazilians over a much longer period involving 100 times more practitioners.Even eddie bravo has originated many techs never seen in bjj.BJJ is a developement and specialisation of a particular part of judo

@scarred10 can see spider in old videos ... it's judo. Watch the beginning of the Kosen vids that have photos from the 1900s. the others didn't exist? bah. not talking about Olympic Judo. Judo. if you want to believe BJJ is some kind of original creation. go ahead. I do agree that in Brasil a nice sporting culture has been created around judo newaza. Basically Japanese Judo as the man below says.

@shinjukool spider guard,knee shield guard,de la riva guard,reverse de la riva,x guard,1 leg x guard,50/50 position.Thats just positions,you have all the sweeps from those as well.Brabo chokes and variations on arm triangle chokes.Leg locks also havent been used in judo for over 50 years but were present in the original system.Kosen is so rare and nonexistant outside japan that it has no influence globally unlike bjj.The gracie combatives is unrelated to judo and twice as effective.

@scarred10 wrong and right. newaza in kodokan judo matches would be what it is. in "kosen judo" which is kodokan by other rules it would be preserved. Maeda applied judo to match fighting and the g self defense comes straight from the kodokan curriculum. i do "bjj". It has made newaza more accessible globally. that is true. list for us all the new techniques, even a few.
