Politics is a dirty game only because the democratic process has been manipulated by selfish motives based on fear, power and conrol. "With all due respect" John McCain is a meanspirited little jerk. Awesome Jackie! Although I must answer your question with slight disagreement. I have seen plenty of these politicians volunteering in hospitals and such places - They just happen to bring along a camera crew and traveling TV studio with them while they're there.

Often doing your duty while in uniform also qualifies one because of the normal expectations or the norm as compared to others. This isn't where people who made propaganda videos to survive were called hero. He not only denied them that, his duty, he willfully stayed and was tortured because of the possible enemy use the officially approved release might entail, beyond his duty. Begrudge any policy you wish but I find it silly to argue he didn't go beyond enough to warrant the title.
