Some talented person (Kong Yan Yan) plays a rearranged version of Niccolo Paganini's Caprice no. 24 on the Erhu, a Chinese instrument. The caprice is originally written for the violin. Rearranged by Chen Chun Yuan.

NOTE: The person in the video is NOT me.

The Erhu is often referred to as the Chinese violin. It has 2 strings and the bow is stuck in between the 2 strings.

  • its amazing how an instrument with such a small resonating body can sound so beautiful. im guessing that octaves/10ths are not posssible on erhu? does anyone know how the 2 string are tuned?

  • usually, the inner string (the string closer to the performer) is tuned to D just above middle C, and the outer string is tuned to A just above middle C. so the strings are a perfect 5th apart. the highest note is about 4 octaves above middle C.

  • The first few seconds of the video list the performer's name as Kong Yan Yan. I don't recall any SCO players with that name.

And SCO refers to Singapore Chinese Orchestra, right?

  • SCO refers to Singapore Chinese Orchestra, and Kong Yan Yan is in it.

  • hmm... looks like i'm out of touch with SCO.

  • She looks like the SCO player.

  • Looks like only. I highly doubt she is.

When the video was filmed, she was a student at one of the music conservatories in China.

  • Wow! Amazing! True admiration to that erhu artist from a German violinist! Congrats!!!! :-)

  • This is truly incredible! Playing this caprice on an erhu must be about as hard as playing it on the tuba. Congratulations for a performance 2nd to none. I am sure that Jascha Heifetz would have admired your performance of this most difficult etude. I am curious as to how this caprice compares to traditional music in difficulty for this instrument.

  • 1:02, pity, 二胡(er-hu) can't do the double notes.. :P

    it's amazing though.

  • I think Chinese violin only best for Chinese music, particularly the traditional ones. Not play western music. Why? I felt the tones sounds weird. Because the Chinese violin is different made by all organic materials with different setting than western violin. For example the high tone is not good.

  • 1:38 holy shit

  • Best regards, thanks for this video!!!

  • Amazing!!!

  • wow! i can't believe that you actualy can play this hard piece with erhu=)

  • Awesome. You have a better tone than most violinists.

  • ur finger is dancing :D
