The Beach Boys are an American rock band, formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. The group was initially composed of brothers Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. Managed by the Wilsons' father Murry, The Beach Boys signed to Capitol Records in 1962. The band's early music gained popularity across the United States for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a Southern California youth culture of surfing, cars, and romance. By the mid 1960s, Brian Wilson's growing creative ambition and songwriting ability would dominate the group's musical direction. The primarily Wilson-composed Pet Sounds album and "Good Vibrations" single (both released in 1966) featured a complex, intricate and multi-layered sound that was a far cry from the simple surf rock of The Beach Boys' early years.
However, Wilson would soon lose control of the band due to mental-health and substance-abuse issues. Subsequently, although it released a number of popular albums (in various musical styles, with different line-ups) in ensuing years, the group never managed to reclaim its mid-'60s peak when The Beach Boys briefly challenged The Beatles both in terms of commercial and critical appeal. Since the 1980s, there has been much legal-wrangling among the group members over royalties, songwriting credits, and use of the band's name. While The Beach Boys released their last studio album in 1996, a number of versions of the band, each fronted by a surviving member of the original quintet (Dennis and Carl Wilson died in 1983 and 1998, respectively), continue to tour.
The Beach Boys have often been called "America's Band", and Allmusic has stated that "the band's unerring ability... made them America's first, best rock band." The group has had 36 United States Top 40 hits (the most by an American rock band) and 56 Hot 100 hits, including four number-one singles.[2] Rolling Stone magazine listed The Beach Boys at number 12 on their 2004 list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". The core quintet of the three Wilsons, Love and Jardine was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
Beach Boys Concert is a live album by The Beach Boys, released in 1964. It is their seventh album in all, and their third alone in the same year. What is perhaps most notable about the album is that it provided The Beach Boys with their first #1 album in the US, remaining at the top for four weeks and becoming another gold seller.
Beach Boys Concert proves to be a timely release because leader and producer Brian Wilson was about to vacate his position in the live group, and would only perform sporadically with them over the course of the next three decades. It is also the only live document of the original five members of The Beach Boys in officially released LP form. It was recorded live at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, CA.
The album includes several songs that The Beach Boys regularly performed live but had not previously included on an album, such as "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow", and "Monster Mash". "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" was actually a Jan & Dean hit. Alongside those were a sampling of their favorites, such as "Hawaii", "In My Room", "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "I Get Around".

@zenphil Good call. Surfin' Bird was a combination of two R&B hits by The Rivingtons: "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word". In this clip the Beach Boys are covering Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow.

Because of this video I will never ever be able to hate Mike Love the way that SOME people say is required to be a "real fan" of Brian Wilson or the Beach Boys, which in itself is crazy.

@SCBianchi Yes, it is crazy. Mike and Brian were cousins and best friends. Later when they drugs were destroying Brian and the band, Mike did his best to try to keep things together. My best friend from gradeschool through college got terribly addicted to drugs. I finally had to cut him loose or let him drag me down with him. It's a very hard thing to do.

There were lots of bands that lip-synched back then because it was hard for sound techs of the day to make em sound good live, but the Beach Boys always went live, and I admire them for doing no phoney music--they played their stuff live--warts and all. They are among the all-time greats!
The stripe-shirt era was my very favorite. They went hippy eventually and while still great, it wan't exactly an improvement.

@jmshaw357 Some TV shows required lip-sync due to the technical limitations you mentioned. American Bandstand was one of those shows.
