Since coming to power, Vladimir Putin's autocratic hold on the nation has been unyielding, forcing Russia's news media into compliance. Political debate has been muted and political dissent controlled.

Over the past decade, dozens of journalists have been murdered in Russia and many more have been beaten and mutilated. Yet there have been few convictions for any of the attacks and there has been a historical nervousness of candid political expression. "The fault lies not with specific people. It's the whole atmosphere", says journalist Oleg Kashin. He believes that one man is ultimately responsible, Vladimir Putin. Many are afraid that his hold over the media threatens a bleak future for those whose job it is to question political authority. For the opposition, there is only one answer: "Russia must be free of Putin!" As his popularity wanes, is free speech around the corner?

There is a saying in Russian which goes something like "a pig will always find dirt". No offence mate, but you either fled Russia in the 80's or you're just brainwashed as hell. Particularly in terms of political repression. I honestly never seen a country with more political freedom than Russia, and trust me I've seen a lot. What the opposition there says and does is beyond imagination. Here in the UK they'd be long gone, explaining their beliefs to their cellmates.

  • @Mocsk Man, as a refugee who fled like the wind from Russia and someone who has grown up cultivated in the social myopia and indoctrination of Russia, your views are in STARK contrast to what Russia actually is: a very uninviting, dangerous, and politically repressed place that has yet to come to terms with losing the cold war

    > simple minded views

Compared to the ideal world - perhaps. Compared to the whole other world apart from a few European countries - come on, you can't be serious.

    > enjoyed my time in the Czech Republic, Poland

    these is not former USSR

    > and Ukraine

I don't see any difference to Russia in Ukraine when I go there - apart from Ukraine being noticeably poorer and their elite and government supporting apartheid.

    >...and age

it's a feature of any developed economy

    > Thousands of people decide to leave Russia every month

Less than 15,000/year leave Russia. More than 200,000/year move in to Russia in search of a better life.

    > RT..they are very soft on Russia

There are enough channels that go excessively hard on Russia. FOX News goes very soft on the US and fabricates material on Russia. RT was not created for criticizing Russia. Would you complain that BMW makes shitty mobile phones?

    > failed empire

it failed as an empire in 1917. it was not an empire since then (and I don't mean just the name)

    > in recovery

matter of opinion. what is recovering doesn't really look like an empire

    > I encountered blatant racism in Moscow

so you immediately make assumptions about the majority if not all the russians? you see what I mean when I say "ignorant redneck" without any clue what systematic scientific approach is?

    > Your population continues to decline

    it doesn't

  • @Mocsk I do wish the best for your country. I wish her people let go of their simple minded views. You have a rich history and you may be great again some day. To be fair not most people I met were not racist brutes. I just can not justify returning there any time soon. I would however revisit other countries from the former USSR. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine.

  • @Mocsk Russia IS a failed empire in recovery. I am an American born Latino and I encountered blatant racism in Moscow. I often felt unsafe there.I regret ever visiting your country. I don't live on a ranch. I have actually traveled extensively and currently live in Argentina. In reference to RT..they are very soft on Russia. My opinions come from experience. Your population continues to decline and age. Thousands of people decide to leave Russia every month in search of a better life.

  • @SearchAndBuild

The one where you described Russian government, RT, their corporate strategy and way of viewing Russia, journalism and being a journalist in Russia, the importance of Russia in the world, its current and former status and racism in Russia, somehow managed to get every single thing mentioned wrong and made yourself look like a complete ignorant redneck idiot who has some sort of weird twisted opinion on anything that happens outside your ranch.

  • @Mocsk You mean the one were I described Russia? I have been there. I know it well.

  • @Mocsk what comment?
