This story of a Welsh valley's turn-of-the-century descent from pristine paradise to despoiled coal mining region, is told in flashback form by Huw Morgan, an old man who has decided to leave the valley forever. Huw is the youngest in a family of 6 brothers and 1 sister and the film centers on his struggle toward manhood amid conflicting demands of faith, economics, education and family loyalty in a Wales caught in an irreversible shift from a pastoral to an industrialized society. The story, based on the novel by Richard Llewellyn, is accented by an impressive background of Welsh choral music and quaint patterns of speech. Written by Joe Jurca

I love old movies the older the better. And I like Roddy M..and Maureen O. so I tune in to watch this movie on TCM 5-11-13 and I just fell in love with the story line personally I don't think that its fair to refer to it as M.O. movie its more of a roddy M film and it was so endearing ...awww it sadden me when the dad died in the cole mine...broke my heart <3 but I loved that they made it so that Roddy character was with in the dads arms when he died

The Maltese Falcon is nothing to sneeze at either, but it also got shut out by How Green.

Wonderful film, and It is very easy to see why it won The Best Picture award opposed to Citizen Kane, but only when you look at the controversy over Kane. Nowadays, Citizen Kane is over 10 times more worthy of that award.

My grandfather, a miner before the Great War and during the Second WW, was appalled - as were his two brothers - that people should think that they would be singing as they emerge from the collieries. Coal mining, they noted, was a fithly, back breaking (low seams), dangerous and tedious job. The few Welsh actors with big parts in the film added to the ridicule heaped upon the film. That was their view. And yes, the accents are really poor!

I reckon Maureen paid the price for her appalling Welsh accent at the end of Maclintock with the application of the coal shovel- how appropriate!
