Here's Joan Sutherland singing the finale of Bellini's I Puritani in this 1973 studio recording.

  • There has never been such a large, rich coloratura voice so firmly anchored in the torso as this one. A miraculous instrument, the likes of which come once a century.

  • This aria is wonderful, they should include it at every I puritani performance!

  • @65attila Actually it was recorded in 1973, but it's still a marvel. Most sopranos drop Elvira by age 46; Sutherland still had over 10 years of Elviras left in her!

  • nothing compared to Gruberovas performance!!!

  • ESTO ES LA FUERZA DEL BELCANTO.PURA ENERGIA VIBRANTE.EL HEAVY METAL DE LA OPERA.JOAN SUTHERLAND

  • why did they speed up the end, if anything, it should slow down and be more dramatic

  • The huge sound of her voice especially at the very top on recordings is a shadow of

the sound on the stage. This performance is a marvel - she was 51 in 1976 when I belive this was recorded.

  • As I understand, Bellini was asked to write this aria so that there would be a glorious aria to end the piece. This ending is one of the reasons that "I Puritani" is my favorite opera.

  • her voice is so creamy here! I love it
