he didn't know for sure but his play was to cover the lower part of the net quickly as possible and by stretching the leg he give himself a chance to cover the middle and upper part at last second with his glove. Great save are made with great positioning techniques. And most of all a good goalie never quit. You really should watch some of his video on youtube and you will see that he has one of the greatest glove in the league.

I'm a stars fan and I was watching this live and I was absolutely amazed when I saw him save this. I thought it was a for sure game winner and he comes out of no where to glove it.
