Walker Percy receives the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame at their 1989 Commencement. His address to the graduates is quintessential Percy--and a "primer" not only for his work but for understanding the work of the Catholic novelist.

  • More people should read his work.

  • He really starts laying it on the line at 7:30, God bless him. We shan't soon see the likes of Walker Percy again, but we could really use him now. Thanks.

  • Notra Daym!

Walker was great! Thanks be God for such a man of life and reason.

  • @steve I am a commie Roman Catholic--I love Percy you probably have a better chance than I do I believe with Bonhoeffer that there is a hidden church in which we are all members incorporate. The finest priest I ever met was high episopalian but I now prefer low mass no smells and bells.

Anyway God be with you and who knows as Paul says "Our life is hid with Christ in God" Dr Percy I believe is with Christ in God

  • notre dame sucks so hard now, compared to this moment.

  • He taught us how to live by showing us we aren't dead yet.

  • God bless Dr. Percy and may he rest in peace. He was a Roman Catholic and I am a High Church Episcopalian Anglo- Catholic. Our Lord willing, however, I still hope to hang out with Dr. Percy in the next world:) --

  • Tell this to Jenkins!

  • You've got to admit their fight in the nursing home was pretty hilarious though

  • Amen, amen, amen!

  • I recently finished The Second Coming. I will long remember Will's idea involving the three nursing home residents. I'm glad Percy decided to contradict the notion that old folks have little to offer and should therefore submit to pressure withdraw from life.
