James Kalm accompanies viewers on a walking tour of "Runts" a selection of Robert Rauschenberg's recent works. At the age of 83, Rauschenberg is acknowledged as an icon of American art and the harbinger of "Pop". These "transfers" bare witness to his continuing activities, and ongoing innovations which exploit the divisions between photography and painting.

  • ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG RIP 1925-2008

I wish I could have made the opening and caught some shots of him. JK

  • To Mr.Wow and all "Kalm Report" viewers,

Thanks for all your support. It was my intention when I began posting these art world videos that they would somehow provoke a discourse between people about the ongoing questions of art. Art ain't just about the object, or how much stuff sells for, it's about the energy and network of people, and I'm just spreading the net, thanks all JK

  • pigment transfer on "polylaminate". either dye sublimation on some any kind of dye sub' coating over something white. or inkjet transfer (unlikely). the breaking up of the image is suspect of overheating during transfer.

the work: his talent was ground breaking way back when. now 12 year old art students could knock these off. for $400,000 i want my hair to stand on end.

  • I think the "transfers" were accomplished by taking large format digital prints, laying them face down on the poly, saturating them with a solvent (I used benzene, highly flammable nasty stuff) then running this sandwich through a litho press. JK

  • It's always interesting to see people's comments when I mention prices. Aesthetics, cleavage, or brilliant innovations fall on deaf ears, but money gets folks hackles up, ha ha.

"My kid could do this" yeah with fifty years of practice and the world's most ingenious marketing strategy behind her. JK
