This is not skilled labor. ANYONE can do these jobs. You can bring kids out of a high school, slap them in a GM plant and by the end of the day they will be experts at it.
Its really all dummy proof. You cant miss a bolt, a screw, a step. All the drills and wrenches are hooked up to computer systems which wont allow the worker to miss anything. All the welding is done by robots instead of humans. Decades ago it was not like this, a auto worker needed to know skills like welding. Now they dont.
1: That measure comes from dividing man hours by units produced. So, yes, it actually does mean that what's coming out is efficiently processed. As for quality, UAW members can only assemble what's given to them so take it up with GM.
2: Yes the big 3 are wall to wall union for their hourly employees but they only represent 50% of all cars manufactured in the US.
@IUEC38 Wow.... Really? Since all of the big 3s plants are unionized and domestics still outsell imports that's not surprising. Volume does not prove anything about how well a plant runs. I can pump shit out of my ass all day but it doesn't mean what's coming out of it is any good or efficiently processed. The Hyundai plant in Alabama is far more productive and cost efficient than anything GM has right now except maybe the Lake Orion plant for the new Aveo, wait..... nope.
Obviously you people never worked on a assembly line for 9 hours a day. Not everyone can do these jobs. I have seen grown men cry because their bodies hurt and they end up quitting. Wearing Uniforms don't make someone a good worker.
@Theollie301 Heat has nothing to do with having self respect and pride in your job. Uniforms are not heavy and every other country in the world wears them in their factories, especially in countries that are much hotter than any car factory stateside. I think overpaying unskilled labor is a much bigger waste of money than a 10 dollar uniform.

@flatblackstrat Sorry this doesn't fit your neat little ideology but the top 3 most productive plants in the US are all UAW plants

@flatblackstrat Cool, write to GM and tell them how offended you are by the fact that they don't buy their employees uniforms. Dipshit
