Elvis Presley I Want To Be Free
Written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for Elviss 1957 movie, Jailhouse Rock. Elvis recorded it April 30, 1957 at Radio Recorders. The movie version is different than the record version. This is the record version. It was released on A Date With Elvis, Elvis: The Other Sides-Worldwide Gold Award Hits, Vol. 2, Essential Elvis-The First Movies, Elvis-Close Up, The King of Rock n Roll-The Complete 50s Masters, and the Jailhouse Rock/Love Me Tender soundtrack compilation, which is where this version is from

There's no joy in my heart,
Only sorrow
And I'm sad
As a man can be
I sit alone in the darkness
Of my lonely room
And this room
Is a prison to me

I look out my window
And what do I see
I see a bird
way up in a tree
I want to be free free
Free - ee - ee - ee
I want to be free
Like a bird in a tree

Oh what good are my eyes,
They can't see you
And my arms,
They can't hold you so tight
I have two lips
That are yearning,
But they're no good to me
Cause I know I can't kiss you tonight

I look out my window
And what do I see
I see a bird
Way up in a tree
I want to be free free
Free - ee - ee - ee
I want to be free
Like a bird in a tree
I want to be free
like the bird in a tree

  • Leiber and Stoller wrote this one. I remember watching an interview with them saying it was a quick song to write. Elvis, as usual, didn't let them down with his performance of the track. I really like this one.

  • love it
