This is a musical version of Smiles of a Summer Night, an Ingmar Bergman film and his only comedy. Bergman took his only trip to New York to work with Sondheim on this show, what a summer that must have been!

Sondheim's delineation of human nature is simply without flaw. He perfectly shows how a man can be thoroughly in love with his wife and yet still find reasons to stray. It even becomes obvious why an older man would gravitate to a girl young enough to be his daughter.
