Actually, Australian Cattle Dogs are born with their tails intact. If it wasn't born with a tail, it isn't an ACD, but an Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, the ACD's cousin. You can look it up on Wikipedia.

@BlackbirdJon normally when they are just born you dock them...where they dont have a tail

Don't you know cats don't like be hearded? Hahaha.

aww hes a cute little guy.. looks like he has plenty of room to grow :)

Yes. The stumpies are a Dingo/Smithfield collie cross born without tails which preceded the ACD which naturally have tails. I don't believe in docking either.

It looks like Whiskey is holding her own against the baby! My Cattle Dog Teo likes to herd the cats too. It is totally safe as long as I keep the cats' nails clipped. They've grown to like playtime and even nap together now.

It was done in the US because the ranchers who had them thought it would keep them from getting their tails caught in fences, grabbed by livestock, etc. After a while, people who had them for pets started doing it because they thought it was supposed to be done. Most people are learning that it does the dogs a disadvantage now though and it's not as common.
Not real sure about the tail thing. Recently on a championship US dog show on TV, the heeler I saw there had a tail, but the vet told us that some are just born without a tail, just a nub like Nerak.
