  • The best department in the world. I spent 3 years of my undergrad in UCL and it built my base that's why I am doing my PhD now in C.S.

  • @woundedtiger40 Good luck in your PHD, you must be coming to the end of it now. Thanks for the informative comments. :)

  • @woundedtiger40 Well, What i'm trying to say is. once you complete your degree can you take higher steps? and move on to another level... And does a P.H.D Cost?

  • @woundedtiger40 Hope you dont end up working in tesco once you got ur P.H.D lol. But hey let me ask you something does computing science offer P.H.D once you completed your degree? can you go to higher steps. and does it cost to extend your rank

  • Part 3

At the end of the day it's your decision, and I hope you will make a wise decision. Just remember students do not get admission so easily in UCL as the competition is very tough. That was all in all my decision that whenever Southampton offered me a place of study, I never accepted that.

    Wish you all the luck.

  • Part 2

and I analysed the list of alumni which helped me to observe that what sort of class study in UCL... If you are really depending upon ranking system then I will suggest you to go for University of Edinburgh as there informatics is the only department in UK that holds 5 stars based on different data & analysys reports & Edinburgh Univ is the highest funded body in UK.

    Contd.....

  • Part 1

Well, Guardian or Times ranking is not an official ranking. There is no doubt that Southampton's CS dept is out standing, and very reputable but UCL has just different class which is not at all compareable at any ground. When I did my A-levels I was offered by both UCL & Southampton but I preffered UCL, I took this decision because of it's great reputation among all national & international employers,

    Contd.....

  • I've applied and got an interview February. Thing is, everyone keeps saying how good the CS department at Southampton is, and that ECS at southampton is highly regarded and known amongst employees. If you look, both in the Guardian and Times guides Southampton are 4th whereas UCL is 13th and 25th respectively. Its really important that I speak to as many people as possible, such as yourself, before making my final decision.

  • UCL has no comparison with Southampton. UCL is far better institute than Southampton. BTW, there is no official ranking of any university in UK. All rankings are done by private newspapers/magazines. UCL is also a brand name in itself that attracts employers to hire it's graduates. But if you don't want to live in London because of high cost of living then go for University of Edinburgh, that's also best univ

BTW, do u hold an unconditional offer for UCL or are you intending to apply?

    Good Luck

  • I'm trying to work out whether to go to UCL or Southampton to do an Meng in CS. Obviously Southampton being 4th in the league and UCL 13th Southampton seems the more attractive choice. What do you think?
