Seeing as Ive had nothing to do this week, I thought Id do another music video tribute, as well as crack on with the FF8 dub. Not exactly an ancient game, this, but still great. Plus I cant find anywhere to download clips from other nostalgic games- Help!

Shadow of the colossus was the 2005 spiritual sequel/prequel to Team Icos previous effort, Ico (Which Ive never played but its supposed to be brilliant). The story begins with a young warrior, Wander, making a plea to a mysterious entity, Dormin, to resurrect his lost love, Mono, who was apparently sacrificed. Dormin decrees that he will only save her if Wander kills sixteen huge beasts which roam the land, the colossi. As Wander rides around the land on his horse, Agro, he encounters these beasts one by one, and upon defeating them, is engulfed by darkness, and wakes up in the temple, with the location of the next colossus. Every time Wander absorbs the essence of each beast, his condition steadily deteriorates, visibly decaying until he almost becomes a walking corpse. Eventually, it is revealed that long ago, the evil entity Dormin was divided into sixteen pieces, which in turn became creatures in their own right, the colossi. The colossi were then sealed in the forbidden land and forgotten. Each time Wander kills one, he is absorbing a part of Dormin. In the end, a group of warriors arrive just as Wander has absorbed the final piece of Dormins soul, and Wander is slaughtered for trespassing upon the land and using the forbidden spell. Upon Wanders death, Dormin uses his body to return to the earth. Fortunately, his massive size is a hindrance to his movement in the Temple, and the warriors are able to escape. The priest casts a spell to destroy Dormin entirely, using Wanders sword to create a portal which sucks Dormin and Wander in. After the warriors escape and seal off the forbidden land by destroying the bridge, Dormins bargain is made and Mono is resurrected. She wanders over with Agro to where the portal was and finds a horned infant, which is actually Wander reincarnated (as he became more infused with Dormins soul, Wander began sprouting small horns). Mono, Agro and the infant Wander climb to the top of the temple, and find a secret garden where they can live in peace, and Wander can lead a pure life.

As well as being refreshingly original, Shadow of the Colossus was also hugely replayable and wonderfully executed all round. Each colossus was a living puzzle, climbing the huge beast and exposing their weak spots. The free roaming nature of the game is the most atmospheric Ive ever seen. The colossi were varied and very well designed, to the point that most if not all showed a moment of frailty or pain before dying, sometimes even evoking guilt. If I was to complain about something, it would be that the PS2 framerate sometimes actually hinders gameplay (although rarely) and for such a long game, the ending is not very satisfying. The music is very good too. Try it, if you havent already.

BTW: To fans of the game; Ive been to the secret garden in the game, theres nothing there. Dont make my mistake and waste valuable time from your life getting there.

  • i thought the garden was a nice omake/easter egg like in God of War II with the ancient quote in the sky

  • There's all sorts of rumours of stuff up there, but its only a garden with some fruit that takes away health & Strength There's no secret colossus or anything remotely impressive. A waste of time overall

  • do you mean a waste to play the game, or finding the garden

  • I'ts a waste upgrading your health and grip so much just so you can reach it. Just play the game.

  • This song is from the Legacy of Kain series... which is also a truly awesome game, albeit very underrated.

  • Awesome cool. You just mixed two of my favorite games of all time. Thanks for this :) Get bored and make more ...lol... I've been inspired. I'm getting photoshop. I've got almost 400 video games to work with.

  • actually! Wander didn't grow horns. He was born with them. He shaved them down and hid them under his headband to make him feel more him. It was in a Japanese magazine. The person on wiki must have not known that

  • that Demon is called Dormin and the boy is called Wander.

If you want to know more things about Dormin search Nimrod

  • You really don´t know much about this game.

The bow isn´t pink, the horse is called Agro and isn´t all the colossus who have horns. One of they is Gaius not Ganon.

    OK?

  • i love dormins voiceX3
